Fashion has aided storytelling in African music videos, using style and beauty to convey emotion, promote our culture, and identity. In this brief exclusive chat with NONSO CHILAKA, popularly known as ‘WHYTACE’, a talented fashion stylist who has made a significant impact in the Nigerian entertainment industry by styling top Nigerian artistes for their music videos, he talks about his journey, inspirations, and the importance of fashion in storytelling, particularly in music videos, and highlighted the skills and qualities necessary to succeed as a stylist. EGUNGWU CHUKWUKA brings excerpts: 


 Tell us about yourself and the work you do? 


I’m known professionally as ‘Whytace’, a seasoned fashion stylist with a passion for helping people look and feel their best. My work includes trend analysis, wardrobe curation, and creating visually compelling looks that align with my clients’ personal style and image goals. 


How did you get started in fashion styling, and what was your journey like? 


My journey into fashion styling began with a love for creative expression through clothing. I started by honing my skills and building my portfolio. Over time, I developed my unique aesthetic and cultivated relationships within the industry. 


Tell us about some of those you’ve worked with as a fashion stylist. 


I have worked with many notable/ renowned musicians, actors, and influencers who value authenticity and creativity in their style choices. While confidentiality is paramount, I can say that each collaboration has been a rewarding opportunity to showcase my vision and expertise. 


How do you determine a client’s personal style/ preferences? 


Understanding a client’s personal style and preferences is a collaborative process. I start by listening attentively, observing their current wardrobe, and asking probing questions to uncover their tastes, lifestyle, and image aspirations. This allows me to tailor my styling approach to reflect their individuality authentically. 


Do you feel fashion aids storytelling in music videos? 


Fashion undoubtedly plays a 90% pivotal role in storytelling within music videos. It serves as a visual language that enhances the narrative evokes emotion, and captures the essence of the artist’s message. From wardrobe choices to styling details, every element contributes to the overall aesthetic and storytelling experience. 


What skills and qualities do you think are necessary for a fashion stylist to succeed?

 

To succeed as a fashion stylist, one must possess a blend of creativity, patience, observance, belief in yourself, intuition, and technical expertise. Strong communication skills, adaptability, and attention to detail are essential for effectively translating a client’s vision into reality. Building a reliable network, staying abreast of industry trends, and maintaining professionalism are also key. 


What are the challenges you encounter as a stylist? 


As a stylist, I encounter various challenges, including tight deadlines, budget constraints, and sourcing unique pieces. Flexibility and problem-solving skills are crucial for navigating last-minute changes and ensuring that every client’s needs are met while maintaining artistic integrity. 


What’s your advice to young fashion enthusiasts craving to break into the industry? 


My advice to young fashion enthusiasts eager to break into the industry is to cultivate your unique voice and aesthetic, never stop learning, and be prepared to put in the hard work.
