Federal Government Arraigns Five For Illegal Importation Of Arms
The federal government arraigned five men for illegal importation of arm on Wednesday. They imported 661 pump action rifle into the country without legal permission.
The arms were intercepted by the Nigeria custom service.
The accused persons Mahmud Hassan, Oscar Okafor, Donatus Achinaulo, Matthew Okoye and Salihu Danjuma were arraigned before justice Ayokunle Faji at the federal High Court Lagos.
In the charge the Attorney General
Of the federation and the minister justice said the accused brought the rifles into the country from Turkey through Apapa port in Lagos using 40 feet container which they falsely claimed it contains steel doors.
In order to evade payment of custom duty, the accused allegedly forged a bill of lading issued at Istanbul ,falsely claiming that it was issued at Shanghai China.The prosecution alleged that the first accused Hassan corruptly gave #1Million to government officials at Apapa port to prevent search of the container by custom officials
The offences were said to be contrary to section 1(2)(c), 1 (14)(a)(i) and 3(6) of the miscellaneous offences act cap M17,laws of the federation of Nigeria 2014.
KA Fagbemi applied for a date to commence trial but urged the the court to order that the accused should be remanded in prison custody pending trials.
Justice Faji adjourned the case to September 12, 2017 for definte hearing and ordered that the accused should be remanded in prison custody.
